Brief History
Costa Rica was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502 in its fourth trip.
He found some Indian reservations, among them Chorotegas, Bruncas and Huetáres.
It is believed that the Spanish gave the name of Costa Rica due to their thought that there were huge gold mines hidden in the mountains. Now days, it is said that the name is given because of the amazing natural resources found in this small country.
The democracy of Costa Rica has been developed for over 100 years. It is one of the oldest democracies in Latin America. The President and his deputees are elected every 4 years. After the War of 1948, the government decided to abolish the army and to create a great deal of institutions in charge of overlook for the benefits of all Costa Ricans.
